Open EO data in support of environmental, biodiversity, and climate policies
The workshop
Jointly organized by the OpenGeoHub Foundation (OGH) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Open-Earth-Monitor Global Workshop 2024 will bring together European and global actors in the field of open-source Earth Observation applications in policy, business, research, and for society.
This international workshop will connect project partners, including data and environmental researchers, public and private sector developers, EU decision- and policymakers, representatives from global institutions, the business sector and civil society to discuss and test solutions to the greatest challenges in geospatial applications.
Through three days featuring international keynote speakers, oral presentations, poster presentations, and demonstrative workshops, the participants of the OEMC Global Workshop 2024 will explore valuable opportunities and establish tangible collaborations to improve geospatial research and application products in open-source.
The social event
As part of the dynamic program of the Open-Earth Monitor Workshop, on 3rd October we are organizing a special social event. This networking dinner will provide a valuable opportunity for a range of participants with different backgrounds from the consortium, academia, policymaking and other sectors to mingle together, get updates, meet and exchange. The social event will be hosted at the exquisite Schloss Restaurant, formerly known as the Grünne Haus. This historic estate holds significant cultural importance, having been built in 1689 by Prince Leopold Dietrichstein. Adorned with magnificent frescoes believed to be the work of Johann Bergel, a renowned artist of Habsburg castles, the venue served as an Imperial Guesthouse in the 19th and early 20th centuries, hosting numerous luminaries. We invite you to join our event and immerse yourself in the ambiance of this remarkable setting while networking with colleagues.

The Open-Earth-Monitor Global Workshop 2024 aims to continue being one of the flagship events for the open-source geospatial community in Europe. Here is an overview of each type session:
1-Keynotes: These presentations will be hosted by our special guests, who will provide a 30-minutes talk. For this year’s edition, we will have representatives from the European Space Agency (ESA), the Max Planck Institute, the EU Joint Research Agency (JRC), ETH Zürich and more.
2- Workshops: The focus of the workshops is open-source software and methods in support of European policies and decision-making. This will be a stage for practical sessions hosted by one or more presenters, who will guide you through new methods and tools. The duration of each session is between 30-45 minutes.
3- Oral talks: Some of the expected topics will be the research and application of geospatial technologies in various fields including governance, industries and in the public sector. This year we will focus also on the role of user communities and corresponding use cases in the fields of Forest & biodiversity; Soil, water & agriculture, and Climate & health. The duration of each talk is 20 minutes.
4- Poster presentations: The author(s) of each poster will be able to give a 5 minutes presentation, which this year revolves around the topics of Forest & biodiversity; Soil, water & agriculture, and Climate & health in the context of open-source tools and Machine Learning technologies.
The global workshop will take place in the stylish event venue of the Laxenburg Conference Center. The history of the Conference Center Laxenburg is closely linked to the Imperial Court, and its presence can still be felt on the premises today. The Conference Center Laxenburg emerged from the former château theatre with its adjoining rooms and the imperial dining halls where the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, Maria Theresia, and her Court once enjoyed theatre productions and culinary delights.
The historic Schloss Laxenburg is nestled in the town of Laxenburg, very close to the vibrant city of Vienna. Renowned for its rich history, impressive architecture, and vibrant cultural scene, in 2023 Vienna was honored as the world’s most livable city for the 10th consecutive year!
The fee covers the costs of facilities, lunches, coffee breaks and social events and is on a cost-recovery basis. No profits are made from organizing this event; there are no additional overheads charged to participants.
*The students fee does not apply for PhD students employed by the OEMC project

The Open-Earth-Monitor project aims to build a F.A.I.R.-compliant cyberinfrastructure to accelerate the uptake of environmental information and help build user communities at European and global levels.
Funded by the Horizon-Europe programme of the European Commission, a consortium of 23 partners led by the OpenGeoHub foundation will provide operational solutions and decision-making tools for European and global initiatives such as DestinE, Digital Twin Initiative, Fit for 55, UN sustainable development goals and more.
Key project deliverables and components of the cyberinfrastructure are:
- Stakeholder committee and user engagement plans throughout the project’s entire duration
- High-performance computing engine and on-site data services
- Tools directly serving EU citizens and governance needs via easy-to-use data portals and apps
- Tools serving global governance needs
